Old growth forest at the New York Botanical Garden
The Thain Family Forest in the New York Botanical Garden is one of the few remaining areas of the old-growth forest that once covered the entire metropolitan area. Some of its trees are 300 years old. The surface rocks bear striations from the last Ice Age, when the area was covered by glacier. It is a quiet place, traversed by only a few trails. To sit there is to touch something ancient and humbling. (September 2012)
