Interviews with Art D'Lugoff, Village Gate owner
Opened in 1958, the premises contained separate venues: the basement was the main club, with a large stage, long tables and small dance floor; on the ground floor was the Terrace Bar; and upstairs, the Top of the Gate. During the 1960s-'70s, the Gate presented mainly bop and hard bop performers. In the 1980s, the stylistic emphasis shifted to jazz-rock, salsa and Latin jazz.
