Place Matters Profile

Atlantic Avenue is anchored on one end by the Atlantic Avenue transit hub and Downtown Brooklyn's YWCA, and the East River on the other end. Along the street, passersby find a diversity of businesses, including antique stores, Middle Eastern restaurants, butchers, clothing and general stores, West Indian restaurants, thrift stores, and more recently, designer boutiques. Downtown Brooklyn's primary Department of Corrections facility (now closed) attracted a number of storefront attorneys to the area, in addition to several bail bondsmen. This stretch of Atlantic Avenue is now undergoing a revitalization under the leadership of the Atlantic Avenue Local Development Corporation.

A special street for its many old rowhouses, antique stores, and in Brooklyn Heights, a Middle Eastern character.

Philip Kayal

The stretch of Atlantic Avenue from the BQE to Flatbush Avenue was the center of Arab American community life for decades. It was the heart of the Syrian Community in Brooklyn. It was famous for its authentic Middle Eastern dry goods stores, groceries, bakeries, and restaurants. (January 2008)
