Place Matters Profile

The Brooklyn Moon Café has been a much-needed vibrant center for local spoken word artists, writers, poets, artists and the general Fort Greene community since its opening in 1995.

Located in a small storefront space, the Brooklyn Moon Café was created by owner Mike Thompson to fill a void in the Fort Greene neighborhood--he saw that there was no place for artists and those interested in the arts to congregate. From the start the cafe hosted book readings and "open-mic" nights for word-artists and poets as well as displaying paintings and photographs by local artists. Clearly this met a need in the community, as it is typical to see a line of people spilling out onto the streets for the café's programs. While continuing as a thriving café, the "Moon" has recently paused its poetry nights, but will soon revive the standing-room-only events.

Laura Rolls

The Brooklyn Moon Café has good food and is a great place for poets to congregate. It also has a nice gallery for community artwork and features local photographers and painters.
